Born in London, William H. Bartlett (1809-1854) became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He traveled throughout Britain, the Balkans, the Middle East, and made four visits to North America and visited the United States to draw the buildings, towns, and scenery of the northeastern states. He is noted for making sepia wash drawings of his works at the exact size he wished them to be engraved. His finely detailed steel engravings were published uncolored as American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature by George Virtue in London.
